Distinguished and Famous people from The Riverina

📖 Mary Gilmore

Mary Gilmore attended school at Brucedale, Wagga Wagga and Downside before beginning work in small country classrooms. Cootamundra, Bungowannah and Yerong Creek were among the places where she gained early teaching experience. The future poet and journalist then became a probationary pupil-teacher at Wagga’s Superior Public School. Those years connect her writing life with a working Riverina childhood and the uneven opportunities of country education. Her later career reached well beyond the region, but its early geography remained one of schools, family moves and employment. The association is considerably more substantial than a commemorative name on a building.

🎾 Evonne Goolagong Cawley

Evonne Goolagong Cawley’s childhood at Barellan included hitting balls against walls and recording her best scores in the dirt. Living behind the tennis club introduced her to proper courts, but she kept practising against anything suitable, including water tanks. A magazine story about a girl winning Wimbledon supplied an early dream before she properly understood the tournament. The future champion’s beginnings were resourceful and playful, with a racquet fashioned from an apple crate part of the familiar story. Later foundation work encouraged Indigenous children to pursue opportunities of their own, carrying that Barellan beginning into a wider educational and sporting legacy.

🎖️ John Monash

John Monash spent several childhood years at Jerilderie after his family moved there in the 1870s. Family evidence preserved in the Australian War Memorial’s collections places that period before his return to Melbourne for further schooling. It was an early chapter in the life of a future engineer and military commander, well before the responsibilities of the First World War. Jerilderie’s connection is sometimes buried beneath more spectacular later stories, but the childhood residence is significant in its own right. It locates a formative part of his education and family life in the Riverina, without needing to embellish it with uncertain encounters.
